Cape Cod is great for vacationers because it can offer a lot of leisure for people who just need to relax. It also offers many things to do to keep people very busy. There are whale watching tours, deep sea fishing excursions, endless restaurants and endless shopping opportunities. Additionally, if a person is staying in Chatham on the Cape and wants to visit Nantucket or Martha's Vineyard, there are several ferries available. A person can also choose to take a bike or a car over to the islands. Ferries depart from Harwich, Hyannis and Wood's Hole which is by Falmouth.
For the lighthouse fan, there are many available for viewing. Many stores sell Cape Cod maps that identify the locations of the lighthouses.
In the Chatham area, you can find the Chatham, Monomoy and Stage Harbor Lights. In the Hyannis area, the Point Gammon, Lewis Bay, Bishop & Clerks and South Hyannis Lights are main attractions. North of Hyannis on Cape Cod Bay you will find the Sandy Neck Lighthouse. In Eastham, the Nauset Light is very popular and down the road from there is a set of lights called Three Sisters. Up in Truro the Highland Light sits on a cliff over 180 feet above sea level. Continuing north to Provincetown you will find two more lighthouses; Race Point and Long Point. In the Bourne and Falmouth areas, people visit the Nobska, Tarpaulin Cove and Wings Neck Lighthouses. Martha's Vineyard has at least four lights; the East Point, West Point, Edgartown and Gay Head Lights. The Gay Head Light is particularly impressive. And, Nantucket has three lights; Brant Point, Great Point and Sankaty Head Lights. If you take a ferry to Nantucket, you will pass the Brant Point Light. In many ways, lighthouses capture the very essence of Cape Cod. It is an area that developed because of the sea and a former whaling industry. While many lighthouses are decommissioned, their presence reminds us all of the lives many of our forefathers once lived.
